Artist Statement

My artwork deals with choices, passages, and journeys, conveyed through the use of architectural and natural imagery.  While the majority of my work is 2D, recently I have been working in a non-traditional, 3D format.  I chose this format because it combines my interests in watercolor and sculpture, and because by constructing the works in three dimensions, I am able to physically explore the spaces I desire to create.

Stairs are a recurring theme in my artwork.  They hold a fascination for me because of their role as passages to different levels.  Stairs can also represent the unknown; many of my favorite stairs are those that twist out of sight or lead to closed doors.

My paintings range in style from mild to extreme surrealism.  This reflects my view of the world as a complex, constantly changing place.  Things may appear to be one way, but when you look closer you find they are something else entirely.  My artwork expresses my uncertainty at this stage of my life, but also my fascination with the possibilities of the future.
